What is stress? Stress is the body’s way of responding to any kind of demand or threat. When you sense danger whether it’s real or not, the stress response is the body’s way of protecting you.
Stress can come from any situation or thought that makes one feel frustrated, angry, or anxious. Everyone perceives situations differently and has different coping skills. For this reason, no two people will respond exactly the same way to a given situation. Stress is a normal part of life. In small quantities, stress is good; it can motivate you and help you become more productive.
Too much stress or a strong response to stress can be harmful. Similarly, high levels of stress continuing on for a long time are damaging. If we always respond to stress in a negative way, our health and happiness may suffer. The same mechanism that turned the stress response on can turn it off. This is called the Relaxation Response.
